The Lithuanian Presidency (Second Half 2013)

On 1 July 2013, Lithuania, the southernmost of the three Baltic states that joined the EU in May 2004, took over the rotating EU Council presidency for a six month period from the 1st of July to 1st of January in 2013.

Main objectives
The Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU will focus on the three goals of credible, growing and open Europe.

To develop “credible Europe,” the Lithuanian Presidency will focus on strengthening the ground for financial stability by financial market reforms.

Regarding “growing Europe,” the Presidency will work on the Single Market policy inlcuding the development of an internal energy market.

The Presidency will focus on the closer integration of the EU and its Eastern Partners to realize “open Europe.” It is expected that during the planned Vilnius summit in November, the signing of an association agreement with Ukraine as well as the conclusion of negotiations and initialing of relevant agreements with Moldova, Georgia and Armenia will be made.

Overall, the priority works include the economic growth of the EU, reduction of youth unemployment, ensuring energy self-dependence, and safe Eastern neighborhood.


Animal welfare issues

The outlined programme does not mention animal welfare issues. However, it is expected that a more specific discussion about Lithuanian Presidency priorities and the main activities in agriculture, fisheries, veterinary and food safety will be hold after the Presidency started its work.

The work start of the Presidency was officially launched in the European Parliament on 3 July 2013 by Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitè.
