FOUR PAWS launches CAROcat website

Brussels, 21 February 2013 - On the ninth European Pet Night, held yesterday in Brussels, the international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS officially launched CAROcat, a new website for the management of feline overpopulation.

The CAROcat platform (Companion Animal Responsible Ownership) aims to provide, generate and disseminate reliable knowledge about cats in Europe, focusing on feline overpopulation and, as a consequence, all resulting animal welfare problems. Based on the common European understanding that animals are sentient beings (Art. 13 TFEU), CAROcat addresses the problems that result from the rapidly increasing number of un-wanted cats in Europe. Up until now there has been a lack of reliable information and structured data on this topic. FOUR PAWS is now providing scientific, legal and practical tools to all professionals in this field, as well as private owners who wish to learn more about pet ownership.

On the platform, users will find information on cat health, behavior and welfare as well as existing legislation regarding responsible cat ownership. In addition, the website gives an overview of best practices and data on initiatives by NGOs and public bodies working on the no-kill strategy for stray cats.

“The only method to manage the increasing population of stray cats is to adopt a systematic, multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the problem including the whole package of neutering, identification and registration as well as education”, says Marlene Wartenberg, Director of the European Policy Office of FOUR PAWS.

The project is supported by the Istituto G. Caporale Teramo, the European Commission and the Federation of Veterinariansof Europe (FVE).
