The Spanish Presidency (First half of 2010)


The Spanish Presidency of the EU took over from the Swedish Presidency on 1st January 2010 and its main priorities are going to be employment and the economy, Lisbon Treaty implementation, citizenship and foreign affairs. However, considerable attention will also be given to animal welfare topics such as the following:

 

Common Fisheries Policy reform

The new Presidency wishes to take forward and complete the work of the Swedish presidency who managed to achieved after long negotiations common EU regulations on fisheries monitoring.

 

Common Agricultural Policy post-2013, ‘Horizon 2020’

The work begun in recent months on the competitiveness of agriculture and the agri-food industry as well as on the role of women in rural areas are also main priorities of the Spanish Presidency.

 

Situation regarding the dairy market and the CAP simplification process

A ministerial exchange programme will take place in March regarding the dairy market situation and the CAP simplification process will be closely dealt with. A ‘global monitoring’ of Doha (Quatar) round negotiations at the World Trade Organisation will also be assured.

 

Animal welfare labelling

A ministerial exchange of views is planned for the end of February, in particular regarding the issue of animal welfare indicators.
