The Latvian Presidency (2015)

Latvia is for the first time assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1st January to 30th June 2015, taking it over from Italy and afterwards handing over the reins of the presidency to Luxembourg.

“The Presidency will continue to support all the efforts towards ensuring that animal and plant health and food safety standards are strengthened and enforced”

The Presidency has committed to engage the Council towards the following objectives:

  • Strengthening the transatlantic partnership, notably by making all efforts to conclude negotiations on an ambitious, comprehensive and mutually beneficial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement by the end of 2015, and enhancing relations towards other strategic partners.
  • Reaching an agreement with the European Parliament on the legislative proposal on animal health, which sets out a clear and single legal framework for the prevention and control of animal diseases that are transmissible between animals and to humans.
  • Organising an international seminar in Riga during spring 2015 which will focus on the need for increased biosecurity, as one of the key tools for the prevention of transmissible diseases that can be spread within the animal population.
  • Reaching a compromise among the Member States and launching negotiations with the European Parliament aiming to reach an agreement on the regulation for official controls along the food chain.
  • Preparing a legislative proposal for a regulation on the zoo-technical and genealogical conditions for trade in and imports into the Union of breeding animals and their germinal products, as well as regulations regarding the placement on the market of veterinary medicines and medicated feed.
  • Ensuring progress on the multi-annual management plans of fisheries in order to ensure their sustainable management and to achieve the goal of Maximum Sustainable Yield for all stocks.
  • Appropriately representing and coordinating the EU’s position in the negotiations on fisheries partnership agreements with third world countries and in meetings that are planned within multilateral organisations and with the coastal countries on fisheries issues.
